The "8" Team supports Earth Day by cleaning Route 8

NEW BERLIN – The "8" Team's Road Warriors set out on Sunday to participate in its sixth annual adopt-a-highway road clean-up, with members of the community coming out to join the cause.

The "8" Team is a volunteer group organized on Facebook, members include local girl scouts, environmental activists, school teachers and others. For the past five years its mission has been to celebrate Earth Day by doing something positive for the community, and to inspire people to reduce littering.

One of the event organizers, Patti Schrag, said approximately 60 people attended this year, and that it wouldn't have been possible without their help.

"There was a really solid turnout this year, and we look forward to keeping the streets clean in years to come," Schrag said.

At the end of the Earth Day event, she said the group counted the garbage bags filled with garbage from Highway State Route 8 in New Berlin, and she was pleased to see the lack of trash. According to Schrag, since the start of The "8" Team's road cleaning event, the group has gradually seen in decline in trash on the street.

"We like the think the reduced trash is because we're raising awareness, and people are littering less," said Schrag.

She added that it only took about an hour and 30 minutes to get the nine mile stretch of highway cleaned thanks to the hard work from all of the volunteers.

"We've got a great girl scout troop here, and volunteering parents do an awesome job getting all of their kids involved. From just the troops alone we see at least 20 children taking part in the event," Schrag said.

She said with a large number of children running around collecting the trash, it was reassuring to have the New Berlin Police Department there to keep them safe.

New Berlin's New York Pizzeria donated to the cause by providing lunch to the volunteers, and Preferred Liberty Mutual Insurance brought volunteers, provided a meeting place, and purchased the t-shirts for the team as well.

Schrag said she is interested in teaming up with more businesses for future events to help keep the area's streets clean.
